Technology in and out of the classroom
Technology is an integral part of our everyday lives, with computers, tablets and mobile phones found in the workplace, the classroom and many homes across the UK.
81% of 13-18 year-olds own smartphones, and of those, a third also owns a tablet, new research from YouGov reveals.
Having daily access to such technology and software can only benefit children, widening their educational experience and opening up a whole new dimension of interactive learning, and so it’s no surprise that traditional textbooks and whiteboards are becoming replaced in the classroom with tablets and smart boards.
There are many benefits to using technology in the classroom – one is that it means these children, who are going to be looking for jobs in the future in a technologically driven society, will have an insight into how these devices work and will have acquired basic, yet necessary skills such as word processing, navigating around the internet and simple computer programming.
Another benefit is a better learning experience. Research has shown that incorporating an online component into a course makes it easier for students to have an individual, and therefore better, learning experience. They’re able to carry out exercises at their own pace and can repeat challenging modules as often as necessary without fear of embarrassment from friends.
But of course, it’s not just students who can benefit from technology in and out of the classroom – so can parents! Research from the Ofcom – Adults’ Media Use and Attitudes Report 2014 shows that more UK adults are going online using a range of devices. 83% of adults are checking emails and browsing the internet using any type of device in any location, with six in ten adults now owning a smartphone.
