Why do parents want Parents Evening Manager?
Whether you’re a primary or a secondary school, organising parents evening can be a bit of a headache, arranging appointments between parents and teachers within a very small window of time.
However, it’s not just schools who find parents’ evenings a nightmare! We asked parents about the problems they face and discussed why an online booking system like Parents Evening Manager would make the whole process easier.
Many parents told us their school still require them to complete a letter and send it back into school with their chosen appointments, which often doesn’t go as smoothly as it sounds! One parent, Anna Beaumont told us, “I have to rely on my 6 year old to hand the slip into their teacher – and these things tend to have a habit of going missing!”
Another parent, Marie Hickson, agreed, “If the children forget to hand it in or lose the slip, you get whatever appointments are left.”
Mandy Taylor had similar problems, and told us the difficulty with a letter is that her kids don’t always remember to book an appointment and if the teacher is off, appointments simply didn’t get made.
Kim Bontoft recognised it wasn’t just difficult for her as a parent, but also sympathised with the teachers and staff involved in organising the appointments, “We fill in the form, request our time slots and then expect our teachers to cross reference them with all the other classes – it must be a nightmare for them too!”
We asked parents whether being able to book their parents evening appointments online would help. Marie Hickson told us, “With two children to arrange appointments for, and working full-time, 24 hour shifts, parents’ evenings are a logistical nightmare! Being able to do it from our smartphones would be so much easier!”
Many parents liked the idea of being able to book their own appointments, because it gave them the control, rather than their children. Debbie Hare told us, “It would be great to be able to choose the slots I wanted so that I could have enough time to get to see each teacher.”
Michelle Edwards agreed; she told us that thanks to her son’s booking last year she was left with an hour between each appointment!
Mandy Henderson told us: “Booking it from my phone would mean we could see the teachers we wanted to see, not the teachers my children think we should see!”
Another parent told us that it would help make bookings clearer if she could book appointments from a smartphone App. Sophie McCarten said: “I have four kids in school and I always get their times and days mixed up. If I could just glance at my phone and see the appointments for each child that would be brilliant.”
One parent, Donna Shiell, has already booked her parents evening online via ParentMail and told us, “It was so much easier than before”.
Of all the parents we spoke to, all of them felt booking parents evening online or from their smartphone would make the parents evening process easier.
