With over 5,000 students across all campuses, communicating home was not only a time consuming task but also incredibly expensive!
With all communications coming from a single department supporting five different campuses, previously all communications from Activate Learning were sent out via paper and postage. Based in East London, Thames View Infants has a complex demographic, with 43 different languages spoken within the school, as well as high levels of social-deprivation.

Many schools recognise that using technology to improve communications with parents not only saves time and money, but makes life easier for parents. Though many schools use email and text to communicate to parents, many still send forms, permission slips or surveys home requiring information or a signature back from parents home via pupil post.

Alison told us, “Within 10 minutes of sending our second questionnaire on free school meals for infant children, I had 20 completed responses and it wasn’t long before 80% of parents had replied. We certainly wouldn’t have received any that quickly before, it simply wouldn’t have happened with paper copies!”
Parents have reacted well to the online questionnaires, and many have contacted the school to say it would be useful to also collect permissions for trips and other information needed by the school. “Our parents are extremely busy but also very supportive,” says Alison, “having forms and surveys online not only saves the school a lot of time but also the parents.”

We know that many schools offer a wide range of sports clubs, but are your parents aware of them?
With the World Cup, Tour de France and Wimbledon taking over our television screens recently, children all over the UK have been inspired to take part in lots of different activities, encouraged by schools especially during National Sports Week.
However, Ofsted chief inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw recently said that state schools denied competitive sport, arguing that too many professional athletes come from private schools. He went on to say that head teachers of state schools needed to stop treating competitive sport as an ‘optional extra’. The National Union of Teachers responded to this, saying Ofsted’s comparison between state and private school sport was “ridiculous”.
Another report from Helen Fraser, chief executive of the Girls Day School Trust (GDST), said that girls in particular, should take part more in competitive sport to build confidence and resilience. She concluded stating research that girls are far less active than boys is worrying.
According to the report, “research from the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation suggests only a quarter of girls in England meet current recommended levels of physical activity each week, with the proportion taking part in regular sport falling steeply after the age of 10.” Furthermore, it showed that one in five girls do no physical activity at all, twice the proportion of boys.
